Remembering Mr. Lawrence: A life Dedicated to sports, Service and faith

Some individuals leave an indelible mark on the communities they serve, not through grand gestures but through years of dedication and quiet perseverance.  One such individual was Mr. Sam Jacob Lawrence (My grandfather), a former Kerala State football player who later served the Kerala government, overseeing guest houses and eventually retiring from the cape Hotel in Kanyakumari. Beyond his professional life, he played a key role in the construction of the Kanyakumari CSI Church, leaving behind a legacy of faith and service.

His  great grandparents migrated from Kanchiracode near Marthandam  to Thycaud, Trivandrum.

Family heritage is a precious thread that connects generations, passing down values, traditions, and faith. The lineage of Mr. Pakianathan who migrated from Kanchiracode to Trivandrum, reflects a strong foundation of love and devotion, shaping the lives of his descendants.

Pakianathan was blessed with a son, P. Samuel, who carried forward his family's legacy with dedication. Samuel’s life was marked by his commitment to family and faith, which he instilled in his children, S. Jacob and S. David.

Among them, S. Jacob became the father of Sam J. Lawrence, ensuring that the family's name and values continued into the next generation. With each passing era, this lineage stands as a testament to resilience, unity, and the blessings of family bonds.

My Grandfather Mr. Sam J. Lawrence  had three brothers Mr. S.L Jacob, Mr. G. W. Jacob and Mr. Justin Jasper.

Later, he moved to Kanyakumari, where he worked at the Cape Hotel, a well-known establishment in the southernmost tip of India. Kanyakumari, a place of immense natural beauty and cultural significance, attracts thousands of visitors every year. Mr. Lawrence’s role at the hotel allowed him to interact with people from all walks of life, and he carried out his responsibilities with the same integrity and commitment that had defined his career.

The  author remembers seeing Mr. V. V. Giri  the then President of India at Cape hotel in Kanyakumari.

A man of integrity: Lawrence’s Unwavering Principles

Lawrence was not just known for his dedication and service but also for his unwavering principles. During his tenure overseeing government minister, heavily intoxicated, sought accommodation in the guest house.  However, Mr. Lawrence, committed to upholding the dignity and decorum of his position, refused permission for the minister to stay.

This bold decision, though morally right, had serious consequences.  His refusal angered those in power, leading to his suspension from service.  It was a difficult period, but Mr. Lawrence stood firm in his belief that rules and ethical standards should apply to everyone, regardless of their position.  His act of defiance was not driven by disrespect but by a deep sense of duty and responsibility.

Though suspended, his reputation for honesty and integrity only grew stronger.  Eventually, justice prevailed, and he was reinstated, earning even greater respect from his colleagues and the public.  This incident defined Lawrence’s character-he was a man who valued principles over personal gain, proving that true service is not just about duty but about standing up what is right, no matter the cost.

A pillar of Faith: Building the CSI Church in Kanaykumari

Beyond his professional contributions, Mr. Lawrence was deeply involved in his faith.  His most lasting legacy was his instrumental role in building the CSI Church in Kanyakumari.  Churches are more than places of worship-they serve as community centers, bringing people together in faith and fellowship.  Mr. Lawrence’s dedication to the church’s construction was not just about building a structure but about creating a spiritual home for generations to come.
