Three ophthalmologists I admire

Introduction

A teacher is not just a source of knowledge but a guiding force who shapes our values, skills, and purpose. My journey through Joseph Eye Hospital, Sankara Nethralaya, and Aravind Eye Hospital provided me with invaluable experience, but the foundation of my career was built by my teachers. Their wisdom extended beyond textbooks and surgical techniques, instilling in me the essence of dedication, discipline, and compassionate patient care.

In ophthalmology, skill is essential, but true excellence comes from a deep commitment to service. My teachers led by example, showing that restoring vision is not just a profession but a calling. Their unwavering dedication to patient well-being and their passion for teaching continue to inspire me every day.

This tribute is a humble acknowledgment of my gratitude and respect for my Gurus whose impact on my life and career is immeasurable. Their lessons remain with me forever.

Selfless service and Dedication: Honoring Dr. G. Joseph Gnanadickam

Description: Dr. Joseph Gnanadickam

Dr. G. Joseph Gnanadickam was a visionary ophthalmologist and a true humanitarian who dedicated his life to the service of others. In 1934, he founded Joseph Eye Hospital with the noble mission of providing compassionate and specialized eye care to all, especially the underserved. Under his leadership, the hospital grew into a sanctuary of hope, offering advanced treatments, training programs, and rehabilitation services for the visually impaired.

His commitment extended far beyond medical care—he championed holistic eye health by integrating treatment, education, and outreach initiatives to uplift rural communities. Recognizing the needs of blind children, he established a school for them in 1956, followed by a rehabilitation center for blind women in 1975. A pioneer in eye donation awareness, he led by example—upon his passing, his own eyes were donated and restored sight to two blind individuals.

Dr. Joseph’s life was a testament to selflessness, faith, and unwavering dedication to humanity. He entrusted his hospital to the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church, ensuring that it would continue as a charitable institution. Remarkably, he gave away everything he earned for the betterment of society, leaving behind a legacy of boundless generosity. Legends like him are rare, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.

He passed away in the year 1984. I never had an opportunity to meet him in person but the very thought that a person can donate his lifetime earnings to charity shows an  extraordinary level of selflessness, generosity, and integrity. He was someone whose actions were a testament to a deep compassion for others.  His life reflects a profound sense of purpose beyond personal gain, driven by a genuine desire to make the world better. Even without meeting him, the very thought of such a person speaks to an unwavering commitment to service and humanity. He was not just an eye doctor, but a beacon of kindness and an example of how one can live for the benefit of others.
