First Doctor in the Family

Introduction

Family is more than just a connection by blood—it is a legacy of love, wisdom, and traditions passed down through generations. I have information on seven generations, each leaving behind lessons and values that shape the next. This blog celebrates our lineage, honouring those who came before us and inspiring those who will come after.

The Seven Generations of Our Family

1st Generation: The Trailblazers (Great-Great-Great-Grandparents)

Rev. Joseph Kamalam

The roots of our family tree start with this generation, who lived in a time of great change. They were pioneers, facing hardships with strength and determination. Their sacrifices laid the foundation for future generations, teaching us resilience and perseverance.

Rev. Joseph Kamalam was born in 1830 as son of Mr. Vetha Manikkam. He studied at Nagercoil seminary and was ordained as  a priest  in 1860. On January 16, 1867, he received the title of priest   at Kasba church in Nagercoil. Later he worked as 'Assistant Priest ' in Thiruvananthapuram church under  Rev. Mead. After a few years, he became as Assistant priest  in Parasala church and did excellent service till 1898.  Rev. Joseph Kamalam married Rebecca, from Devicode, her father Kutty Nadar  was a native of Devicode.

Rev. Joseph Kamalam , who left the church service, built his own house in Palliyadi and lived there. Staying at Palliyadi, he served God in its environs until he breathed his last.  Rev. Kamalam eldest son excelled as a  priest  and two son’s as doctors. In 1915, at the age of 85, Rev. Joseph Kamalam  ended his earthly life and entered the eternal kingdom.

2nd Generation: The Foundation Builders (Great-Great-Grandparents)

 Dr. Job Kamalam

Rev. Joseph Kamalam (1830-1915) is the father of Dr. Job Kamalam.

This generation continued the legacy of hard work, establishing strong family traditions and values. Their lives were defined by simplicity, wisdom, and a deep sense of community. They passed down stories that still inspire us today.  They survived 1st and 2nd world wars, watching their children fight for freedom

Rev. Joseph Kamalam’s second son Dr. Job Kamalam was a  very pious man. Dr. Job Kamalam worked as a doctor at the 'Atinkal London Mission Hospital'.  Retired  I.G. P.  Devasakayam’s sister Grace married him as his wife. He retired as a doctor in Marthandam Mission Hospital.

His son,  Mr.Selvaraj Kamalam, joined Indian National army and saw action in the battle of Imphal and battle of Kohima (fought on April 4th, 1944).

3rd Generation: The Resilient Guardians (Great-Grandparents)

Surviving wars, economic hardships, and societal shifts, this generation displayed remarkable strength. They emphasized the importance of education, discipline, and unity, ensuring their children had better opportunities in life.  My grand mother Mrs. Charlet Mercy is the daughter Dr. Job Kamalam. Her  husband Mr. Paul Rethinam was in jail fighting for India’s Independence and her  brother-in-law Mr. P.T Paul was in Indian national army and saw action in the battle of Imphal and battle of Kohima. Mrs. Charlet Mercy was the mother of Prof. Edwin. J Paul and Dr. Suresh Paul is her grandson.  Her brother  Mr. Selvaraj Kamalam as we mentioned earlier was with Subash Chandra Bose in Indian National Army

This generation experienced rapid modernization while preserving family values. They balanced tradition with progress, adapting to new technologies and lifestyles. Their wisdom, love, and storytelling remain cherished treasures in our family.

Edwin J. Paul was a passionate educator and  church leader. He served as Headmaster in various schools, History Professor at Christian College, and Secretary of C.S.I. Church, Marthandam. He played key roles in Gideons International, Evangelical Graduates Fellowship, and YMCA, impacting education and Christian ministry.

The parents of today’s generation played a crucial role in shaping the modern family. They pursued higher education, built careers, and ensured stability while teaching values of respect, compassion, and ambition.

6th Generation: The Bridge to the Future (Children)

Growing up in a digital era, this generation is redefining traditions while staying connected to their roots. They embrace new ideas, yet still value family bonds, proving that heritage and progress can go hand in hand.

conclusion

Our family's seven-generation journey reflects resilience, faith, and dedication to service. From pioneers and educators to doctors and leaders, each generation has contributed to society while upholding strong values. As the legacy continues, future generations will carry forward this heritage, blending tradition with progress to inspire and uplift others.
